n.d. Oil on board, 13-1/2″ x 20-1/4″. Framed in No. 321 CV—3″ in walnut (Nut Brown stain), with gilt liner.
Thomas Hill was one of the outstanding early painters of Yosemite. This painting appears to depict Lake Tenaya, just northeast of Yosemite Valley. The loose manner and rustic subject dictated a simple carved frame. For the cool, earthy, muted palette, walnut with a light stain seemed just right. The gilt liner provides emphasis to a quiet picture, and honors and celebrates it.
